Brembo recall 2018 Defects in radial brake pumps

Recall Brembo radial brake pumps
Manufacturers name affected models

Due to possible defects on the piston of Brembo radial brake pumps with a diameter of 15 and 16 mm, some motorcycles have to be recalled. This affects pistons on models from Aprilia, Ducati, Horex, KTM, MV Agusta, Moto Morini and TM Racing.

During internal quality controls, Brembo became aware of the faulty brake pistons in the radial brake pumps with 15 and 16 mm piston diameters, according to the brake specialist’s statement. Under extreme loads (use on the racetrack, frequent use of ABS, falls), the plastic brake piston can break and thus lead to a loss of braking force on the front wheel. The front brake pumps were often installed in combination with Brembo M50 brake calipers. The radial brake pumps affected were manufactured and sold between 2015 and 2017. All of them were original equipment by various vehicle manufacturers. Accessory brake pumps are not affected by the possible lack of quality.

The 2018 Brembo recall affects motorcycles from the following brands: Aprilia, Ducati, Horex, Husqvarna, KTM, MV Agusta, Moto Morini and TM Racing.

Brembo has already informed the relevant motorcycle manufacturers so that the vehicle owners can be contacted as quickly as possible. The recall does not affect models from other manufacturers. This is the opinion of the brake specialist.

Plastic is being replaced by aluminum

As a rule, a supplier does not start a recall, only the manufacturer of the motorcycles concerned. There are currently some recalls in the USA and Germany, for example from KTM, Ducati, Aprilia, Husqvarna and Horex. In the recall measure, the plastic pistons (PPS) are replaced by aluminum pistons.

KTM officially started the recall today (January 26, 2018), which applies not only to Germany but also to all other markets. The following models are affected (from model year 2015): 1290 Super Duke, 1290 Super Duke GT and 690 Duke R. On the KTM page you can use the chassis number to check whether your motorcycle is affected by the recall. If so, for the bike it’s time to go to the workshop. Replacing the brake piston takes about 1.5 hours. the whole thing is of course free of charge. How many models are involved in Germany has not (yet) been communicated. In the USA there are said to be 2,361 copies.

It is not yet known which motorcycles are affected by TM Racing and Moto Morini.
