MOTORCYCLE tour tip – Switzerland Klausenpass tour
The four lakes circuit

Tour tip

Everything as it was back then when the Klausen had to serve for the personal defloration of the alpine pass? Not at all, because after a good quarter of a century, it’s not just the road surface that has changed. Luckily.

On this tour, the classic Swiss passes are lined up one after the other. As a bonus, if not as four lakes in one day – all of them at least touched a little while driving past. The highlight of the tour, on which you should definitely pack your swimming trunks in summer weather due to some bathing spots, is the Klausen Pass with its full alpine flair. However, the section on the Sihlsee and the lesser-known Ibergereggpass are also a treat from a technical point of view. Nice tour for beginners to get to know Switzerland in all its many facets.

route: 210 km / Travel time: 7-8 hours (1.5 days for a stopover with an overnight stay)

Suitable for the lake tour: Start at the ferry terminal in Meilen with a hearty sea trip across Lake Zurich (one-way motorcycle crossing: 5 sFr). From Horgen out of town to the southeast, uphill in the direction of Saturdayern and Schindellegi and on a small road via Bennau to Einsiedeln.

The next body of water: Sihlsee. Along the north bank to Willerzell (east bank) and follow the road to behind Euthal (great lake view!), Finally leave the lake behind you in the south on Rutistrabe. But now off to the real mountains! Via a beautiful winding road to the top of the Ibergeregg pass (1406 m), there is an ideal resting place (many motorcyclists, terrace with a magnificent panoramic view at the restaurant)

Follow the mountain road with a wonderful view down to Lake Lucerne. In Schwyz on the 8 further to Brunnen to the shores of Lake Lucerne (often a lot of annoying traffic in peak travel times). We continue behind Altdorf on the Klausen Pass – top view shortly before the pass summit (1948 m) and rest options at the Hotel Klausen Passhohe as well as snacks on the actual pass summit.

Top panorama also behind the pass! In Glarus, stay on 17, head north and head towards Weesen am Walensee (you may have a break at the Betlis bathing area). Finally, via small streets and towns (Eschenbach, Ruti, Hombrechtikon) above Lake Zurich back to the starting and destination point at the Meilen ferry terminal.
