triumph is currently recalling some models from the years 2018 to 2020 in the USA and Europe due to possible problems with the brake pads. According to the official notification of defects from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) – the US equivalent to our KBA (Federal Motor Transport Authority), the friction material of the front brake pads can detach from the back plate. If the problem occurs, the function of the brakes is of course no longer fully guaranteed and the braking distance is increased.
Ducati
has a recall pending in the North American market for the same reason.
Piaggio confirmed on May 7th that two Aprilias in the USA also have to be recalled due to the Brembo components. A recall campaign is also being prepared for Germany.

Recalls for Germany

The recalled motorcycles have to go to the dealers’ workshops, and the brake pads are then replaced on site. We expect product recalls from various manufacturers in Germany as well. Experience has shown that this happens with a time lag to the North American market. Inquiries about the affected models in Germany are ongoing. Since the brake pads are original equipment, the sovereignty of the recall lies with the manufacturers, who loudly Brembo were also informed in advance.
triumph starts the recall in June. The same models are affected as in the USA, see list below.
Also the recall of Royal Enfield is already running.
Aprilia will shortly start a recall campaign in Germany for the models RSV 4 and Tuono V4 of the model year 2017 to 2020.

Corrosion due to high nickel concentration

The problem appears to be related to a high concentration of nickel used in the brake pads with the BRM10B compound. It causes the material to become porous, thus absorbing water and salt – especially in areas where salt and de-icing agents are used to melt ice on the streets. The ingress of salt and water could lead to corrosion and impair the adhesion of the covering to the slab.

Triumph reported on 13 incidents in which the pad came off without defects from the component supplier Brembo. This flaw prompted an investigation that eventually confirmed that certain serial numbers were indeed problematic.
