BMW reported to the American counterpart to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), that models of the following series are being recalled: BMW R1250GS (2019-2020), BMW R1250GS Adventure (2019-2020), BMW R1250RT (2019- 2020, BMW S1000RR (2020), BMW S1000XR (2020). A total of 9,392 vehicles may be affected.

Leak only when standing

When the motorcycle is stationary, brake fluid can leak out of the front brake calipers. Over time, a leaking front caliper can reduce the amount of brake fluid in the reservoir. However, this happens very slowly in this case and therefore does not immediately lead to a failure of the brake. BMW names the problem “Low pressure leak”, because the leak only occurs when the vehicle is stationary and not when braking while driving. Nevertheless, these motorcycles do not meet the requirements of the NHTSA, which is why BMW in the USA has to recall the motorcycles and notify their owners. The front brake calipers will then be checked free of charge at the dealer and replaced with an improved version if necessary. The recall is expected to start on October 6, 2020.

No BMW recall in Germany

Since, according to BMW, the low-pressure leak has demonstrably no functional effect, in Germany it is from BMW motorcycle do not give a callback. Affected brake calipers are serviced or exchanged for warranty if necessary. The sweaty brake calipers – and whether there should be an official recall – has been discussed in BMW and GS forums since 2019. Whether your front brake caliper “sweats”, you can tell whether there are traces of brake fluid on the saddle, on the rim, on the tire and / or on the ground.
